Best Friend Gift Ideas: Personalized, Funny and Built to Be Kept

Best friend gift ideas are hard for a structural reason: your best friend already owns everything you would think to buy, and the things they do not own, they bought themselves on a Tuesday. What they do not have is a document. The Bureau has processed best-friend filings since 4000 BC, and the gifts that last are the ones that are specific, a little ridiculous, and kept rather than used up.

This guide sorts best friend gifts into five kinds, from free to framed, with notes on what makes each one work.

What makes a best friend gift personal

Personalization is not a name printed on a mug. A personalized gift for a best friend refers to something only the two of you know: the airport ride at 5 AM, the thing from 2019, the code word for leaving a party. The test is simple. If a stranger could have given the same gift to the same person, it is not personal enough.

Three rules the Records Office applies:

  1. Reference a real habit or history. One specific memory beats ten generic compliments.
  2. Make it funny enough to show other people. A best friend gift that gets passed around at the birthday dinner has done its job twice.
  3. Make it keepable. Consumables are pleasant. A keepsake gets found again in five years and read aloud.

1. A best friend contract, signed by both parties

The Bureau's own recommendation, and the one most often framed. A best friend contract formalizes the friendship with clauses about real behavior, a small consideration (three favors, redeemable without explanation, is standard) and a curse of breach. The Bureau files it as the Eternal Allegiance Pact. Clauses from the standard instrument:

All embarrassing stories shared between the parties are protected by eternal attorney-client privilege, although neither party is an attorney.

One (1) airport ride per calendar year is owed by the Best Friend of Record, no questions asked, including departures before 6 AM. This obligation survives death and most forms of reincarnation.

Every joke told by the Countersigning party shall be met with laughter, regardless of quality. Pity laughs are accepted and filed separately with the Bureau.

Curse of Breach: whosoever betrays this Pact shall have their name slightly mispronounced by every barista, receptionist, and automated phone line, for all eternity.

Every clause can be rewritten before signing. Replace the airport ride with whatever your friend actually does for you. For a full drafting method, see how to write a friendship contract.

Cost: drafting on the filing desk and countersigning are free. The gift is the moment they sign.

2. A framed keepsake of the signed pact

A signed contract on a phone is a joke. The same contract in a frame on a wall is an heirloom of the joke. The Company Store prints any filed contract, through Etsy, in three formats:

  • Certified Copy, about US$7: a sealed, numbered PDF, a second copy with blank signature lines (so you can both sign by hand), and a phone wallpaper. Delivered after purchase, so it works as a last-minute gift.
  • Unframed print, about US$29: matte paper, made to order, five to seven days in production. Frame it yourself if you have opinions about frames.
  • Framed print, about US$64: the same print in a black wooden frame, ready to hang.

Prints ship free to the US, EU, UK, Canada and Australia. Prices are approximate in US dollars; Etsy shows the final amount in the buyer's currency. If the birthday is close, the Certified Copy arrives in time and the framed print can follow as a sequel.

3. Inside-joke gifts that need a clause

Some gifts are only funny with paperwork attached. Pair a small object with a single clause, printed and folded inside:

  • A garlic knot, or a pizza voucher, with the Last Slice Accord clause: "The last slice of pizza shall belong to the Friend of the Second Part in perpetuity. It is the one clause the Infernal Appeals Court has never overturned."
  • A cheap pair of sunglasses, with an exit-excuse clause: "On request, each party shall serve as the other's excuse to leave any gathering that has gone on too long. The code word is 'Tuesday.'"
  • A travel pillow, with the airport-ride clause, as notice that the debt is being collected.
  • A mirror compact, with the spinach clause: each party is bound to report spinach in teeth, regrettable haircuts under consideration, and the ex texting again.

Under US$15 each, and the clause does the work the object cannot.

4. Long-distance best friend gifts

Distance favors paper. A contract can be signed remotely, which makes it one of the few personalized gifts that arrives in full on the day:

  • Draft the pact and send it for countersignature by link. They sign from wherever they are.
  • Order the framed print shipped straight to their address, so the gift and the evidence arrive together.
  • Add a clause specific to distance: "Neither party may leave the group chat. Muting is permitted. Leaving is desertion and will be tried in absentia."
  • Set a renewal date. A pact re-signed every year is a standing reason to call.

5. Gifts for the friend who wears their loyalties

For a best friend who lives in black and reads after midnight, the Bureau's Garment Department issues two pieces through the Company Store: the Office Moth tee (black Gildan 5000, a small wax seal on the chest and an envelope-winged moth across the back) and the Graveyard Shift hoodie (sand Gildan 18500, an endless archive on the back, US delivery only). Both run S to 2XL. More in the gothic gift guide.

Matching the gift to the occasion

  • Birthday: the signed pact, framed. Hand over the frame; let them read it in front of everyone.
  • Friendship anniversary or "friendiversary": a renewed pact with one new clause for the year.
  • Moving away: the long-distance version, shipped to the new address.
  • Bridesmaid or best man proposal: a pact with a clause binding them to the role. See funny contract ideas for wedding-party clauses.
  • No reason at all: a single clause in an envelope. The Bureau approves unprompted filings.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good personalized gift for a best friend?

A gift that refers to something only the two of you share. A signed best friend contract does this directly: its clauses describe your actual habits, inside jokes and history, and both of you sign it. Framed, it becomes a keepsake rather than another object, which is what most best friends lack.

What are funny gifts for a best friend under $30?

A countersigned best friend contract costs nothing to draft. The Certified Copy PDF is about US$7 and the unframed matte print about US$29. Pair a single printed clause with a small object, such as a pizza voucher or a travel pillow, for an inside-joke gift well under budget.

What is a good keepsake gift for a best friend?

Something they will find again in five years and still understand. A framed, signed pact works because it records the friendship as it was on the day you both signed: names, clauses, the date and a filing number. Re-sign a new version each year and keep the old ones as precedent.

How fast can I get a best friend contract printed?

Prints are made to order with a production time of five to seven days, plus shipping. For a birthday, order two weeks ahead. If you are late, the Certified Copy PDF is delivered after purchase, so you can give the digital pact on the day and the print afterwards.
